Super Cinema Rundown: All The Future Comic Book Films Coming Out
Let’s face it, Comic book movies are the dominant form of media right now. The next few years are littered with new films and tv project that each Summer seems like there will be a new movie every week. Don’t get me wrong, I love comic book movies, but since there are so many coming out next year and the next few years, you might lose track of it all. That’s why Comics Alliance made this very handy infographic that shows you when both DC and Marvel films will be released. Granted, some of these movies are pretty far away, so release dates can be changed.
As you can see, a few of the movies on the list have already come out. Avengers: Age of Ultron came out and made a truckload of money, but it didn’t quite have what the first film had. A lot of it felt forced, and you could see that the studio may have forced scenes in that didn’t quite fit with what Joss Whedon’s vision for the film was.
Ant-Man came and went. It made money, but after a month, or even a week, no one was really talking about it anymore. I didn’t waste time seeing it since it became a poster child for what Marvel has been accused of doing: Not worry about making one great movie, but having a movie set up the next couple movies. I became more interested in the end credits scene instead of what happened in the movie. I’d rather of watched the original version that was meant to be filmed by genius director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead).
Fantastic Four absolutely tanked in the theaters. It’s understandable… I watched it and it felt like 45 minutes were cut from it. The pacing was weird, most of the scenes where The Thing was in action in the trailer was missing, Kate Mara’s replacement wig for the reshoots were distracting, and it was pretty much unlikable on every level.
The big guns come out in 2016:
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — March 25th
- Captain America: Civil War — May 6th
- X-Men: Apocalypse — May 27th
- Suicide Squad — August 5th
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice really kicks off the DC Cinematic Universe with the introduction to multiple new characters that will soon have films based on those characters. It’s unknown what that state of Man of Steel 2 is. First, it was reported that George Miller would be directing, but then it was said the movie was on hold. So who knows.
Captain America: Civil War will have the Avengers battling each other and will introduce Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. X-Men: Apocalypse has the team face one of the strongest bad guys in Marvel’s catalog, but the problem with this movie is that last movie ended with everyone being alive, so it takes away from any of the tension in this movie. I’m not sure how they’re going to do it. Suicide Squad gives us a new Joker played by Jared Leto. The more I’ve seen of him as the Joker for, the more I’m liking it. I just had to hear the voice and the laugh to be sold on his portrayal.
2017 brings all sequels and spin-offs. It will also be the ultimate test for DC because they are introducing Justice League. Justice League has always been superior to the Avengers because I’m pretty sure a God like Superman would have no problems with Hawkeye.
Obviously, Fantastic Four 2 will never happen and Amazing Spider-Man 3 is completely gone. It’s not like anyone is really pining for the later anyway, or the latter because the reboot was a dreadful mess that was only created to keep the rights to the character for a few more years. Hopefully, Marvel can make Spider-Man cool again.
The problem with all of these movies coming out in the span of a few years is whether audiences will still be down to keep paying for them in theaters. You can only have so much of a good thing for so long before people get burnt out on it. My favorite food is pizza, but I wouldn’t want to eat it everyday.
I felt burnt out on comic book movies when I was watching Age of Ultron. The opening scene where the Avengers where kicking ass in the snow with zero difficulty while everyone was making fun of Steve Rogers making a quip about Stark swearing. The joke was stretched for 10 minutes and I almost wanted to leave. I was overall disappointed with the film, but I think Civil War will make up for an underwhelming film. What made the first Avengers so good was the anti-team they were, but they finally came together to save the world. I hope to see more of them feuding and then come together in the final two films.
With the next 5 years of comic book films on the horizon, only time will tell if the audiences will stick around. I’m guessing this is a fad that won’t be going away anytime soon. I still have so many Beanie Babies I can’t sell.
