Uber acquires ‘Otto’ and delivers liver shot to Google’s self-driving car program

Uber has been making preparations to test self-driving vehicles for some time now and now the ride-hailing giant says it’s just a matter of weeks.
Uber also announced Thursday that it had acquired Otto, a start-up with around 90 employees comprised of former Google and Carnegie Mellon engineers. Otto is co-founded by Anthony Levandowski, who just happens to be the co-founder of Google’s self-driving car program.

When Uber puts its modified Volvo XC90s on the streets of Pittsburgh, it will be the first attempt to commercialize vehicles that drive themselves without the need for a human being at the controls.
