MMA’s Cult Comedy – Tommy Toe Hold
Meet the one man show that’s carved it’s way into mixed martial arts culture. The Tommy Toe Hold Show boasts over 10Million views on Youtube with 52,062 subscribers as I write this piece. Hefty numbers since the first show posted on March 7th, 2012. The TTHS has developed a cult following in mma culture so much so that the biggest fighters in the sport participate on a regular basis. This summer UFC Champ and superstar Ronda Rousey got into a playful back and forth talking about surfing, self driving cars and buffalo wings on the show.

“In television we have satires like SNL – in MMA we have the Tommy Toe Hold Show” said MMA icon and UFC announcer Bruce Buffer.
It’s a refreshing break from the normal media questions and answers fans usually get from fighters or about the sport. The show does cover news related information but takes an angle that’s a departure from the unvaried information and quotes one typically finds when researching anything having to do with MMA.
Most fans will never see him although Tommy (not his real name) does make it to events. From what i’ve heard he does look exactly like the character. “I have the beard, I’m not as angry, and my arms don’t go to my feet.” Says the creator of Tommy…who we’re calling Tommy.
“I keep incognito. I did go to a UFC event and spoke to some fighters and told them who I was and that was an interesting experience. They were all positive. One time I was in Millwaukee and saw a fan wearing a TTH shirt and I was gonna introduce myself but then I thought there’s no way this person knows who I am and I could be anyone. So I turned around. I’ve had people approach me as being a Mascot at a fight and things like that. But I can see the actual Tommy making an appearance at a fight. That might be something you see in 2015.”
“Another thing that’s been huge for the show is the rise of the interest of personality. Chael Sonnon started to get a lot of attention for how vocal he is. That’s been huge for my show cause everyone is a character now.” New generation fighters such as Conor McGregor have taken a page out of Sonnon’s book of entertainment for the fans and crossed over to offering much more of what you get in the public eye.
The show looks to add dimension in 2015 adding features and clips of mock press conferences and Barbara Walters sit down styled interviews. “The TTHS you first started seeing which was to be a comedy show of a guy standing with guests will still exist one day a week but all the other days I’m going to offer daily pieces of content. One day might be Tommy talking to fans, another might be ranting about something in the sport. Short viennettes.”
I asked UFC veteran announcer Bruce Buffer about the show, “I started watching it over two years ago. It’s completely original and funny. As much as I know talent his format and delivery just blew me away. In television we have satires like SNL – in MMA we have the Tommy Toe Hold Show”
Maybe “It’s Time!” for Bruce to be on the Tommy Toe Hold Show.
