Israeli Startup Develops The Syqe
The creation is called a thermal metered-dose inhaler, and is the first device of this kind designed specifically for medical cannabis. There’s issues with variance between plants and strains, but it’s a step forward for studies to be done on dosage of marijuana as a medicine.
Doctors can take control of the marijuana regimen the same way they would with other medicines. This will help patients from over medicating.
One of the major problems with the medical marijuana industry is that it’s yet to become standardized. Many strains of marijuana produce different amounts of THC, CBD, and CBN even between plants of the same strain. This makes it hard for some to consider marijuana a real medicine, since it doesn’t abide by the same standards of dosage as drugs that are used for the same purposes.
Israeli startup company Syqe Medical plans to change that with a new vaporizer they plan on marketing to doctors and hospitals. The Syqe Inhaler is loaded with granules of marijuana as small as 1mg and will help standardize the amount of marijuana a patient uses.
Clinical trials of the product have shown promise. A study involving 8 patients showed a 45% reduction in pain intensity (which is honestly nothing new to the marijuana world) which lasted for about 90 minutes. The precise dose will allow patients to get the pain relief that they need without causing a significant interruption to their day which can be caused by super potent strains of marijuana.
This device gives us Physicians the confidence to prescribe cannabis in the same way we prescribe other drugs today
The team is looking for more funding for the project, and hopes to put it into consumer’s hands. The device will use preloaded disks that look somewhat like old projectors for viewing photo slides. Each of the slides is loaded with a precise amount of marijuana that was grown in very similar conditions. The company says that the slides will have an accuracy of up to 100 micrograms between slides, and it seems that they will be using the same strain for each slide.
Given how focused Syqe Medical is on the precise blend of cannabinoids used for pain relief, it is more likely that they will switch to extract blends in the future. Perhaps they will have different concentrations of cannabinoids, to target specific ailments by making blends of cannabinoids with different medicinal effects. They could make antivirals, antibiotics, chemotherapy, stress relief dozens of other specialized medicines by refining their technique.
It seems that metered-dose inhalers are the future of medical marijuana. They offer a much more controlled approach to those who are not a fan of the more recreational effects marijuana and take the medicine to a more serious level.
