BIKEHUD – The Helmet Tech You Need
Riding a motorcycle when you’re a novice can be a pretty dangerous thing to take up as a hobby. You get on the bike, look awkward, and you might even fall over before you even start the bike. A new project on Kickstarter by BIKESYSTEMS aims to help out the beginning biker as well as the expert biker with its brand new advanced motorcycle Head-Up Display: The BIKEHUD.
It almost seems like a display you see in a videogame, but it’s real and you can add it to your helmet. If you’ve ever ridden a bike, you know that looking down at your meters takes a second or so to know how fast you’re going. That second could be the difference between stopping in time or not stopping at all before a catastrophic incident. The worst fear for any biker.
Tech specs for the BIKEHUD includes:
- 0.35″ 9mm x 6mm transmissive display.
- IMX6 Processor running Android o/s.
- Low power 3.3V consumption
- Android 5 OS
- IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity up to 150MBps transmission.
- Target weight including battery: 100g
- Size is 1″ (25mm), since it fits inside the helmet
- Feels like looking at a transparent screen the size of a 25″ monitor about five feet away.
The kind folks over at BIKESYSTEMS were able to give the Social Underground more even specifics on the BIKEHUD system:
Installation
There are four components to a complete BIKEHUD system: the in-helmet display, the controller (BIKEHUB), a handlebar mounted control panel and the cameras. The in-helmet display can be installed on most full-face and flip-front helmets in minutes, and can be moved between helmets. The BIKEHUB controller is about the size of a smart phone, it and the control panel can installed on the motorcycle by any competent DIY or auto-electrician.
Safety
It takes about one second to scan motorcycle instruments, when travelling at 50mph this equates to the rider being ‘blind’ to the road for at least 70 feet (21m) – with BIKEHUD, the rider always has eyes on the road.
Currently, the BIKEHUD has a Kickstarter going that needs £120,000 to get its project funded. It has just about £5,759 so far and has 19 days to go. If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast who wants the best of the best when you’re burning up the road, I suggest you head on over to their Kickstarter page and donate some money for this cool and futuristic technology.
