Your Poop Could Soon Power Your Car
The worst part of your day is having to go to the bathroom. There’s a reason that when you have to use the restroom for your bodily functions it’s called waste. That’s literally what it’s called when you have to go. But what if instead of wasting your poo and sending it to a treatment center, you could have it used to power your car.
Aside for the poop that you produce every year, the United States produced over a billion tons of manure from agriculture. This manure, if you haven’t heard, produces nitrous oxide methane emissions. These greenhouse gasses are 325 times more potent than that of carbon dioxide. If you’ve ever heard about how cows farts and manure produce a whole bunch of methane that pollutes the sky, this is pretty much that means.
In the video below, graduate researcher David Wernick discusses his ongoing work at UCLA to turn all sorts of waste and even carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere into feed stocks for producing biofuels, and for making the process of manufacturing biofuels clean and sustainable.
It’s really a great idea. We have the power of the Sun that could give us unlimited energy, but we never really look at the stuff we think is waste of garbage he at home that could help power the things we use everyday. We aren’t really doing much else with the manure besides using it for fertilizer. Might as well use it to power everything!
