U.S. set to lift ban on openly transgender troops
The United States Pentagon plans to announce the repeal of its ban on transgender service members July 1st. Nearly a year ago Secretary of Defense, Ash Carter said the U.S. military’s ban on the open service of transgender troops was “outdated” and promised the policy would be reviewed.
“As a result, we’ve come up with a plan that will direct each branch of the armed services over a one-year period to implement new policies affecting the recruiting, housing and uniforms for transgender troops”, one official said.
Carter announced last year that the ban, which affects a fraction of the military’s 1.3 million active duty members, would be lifted unless a review showed that doing so would have “adverse impact on military effectiveness and readiness.” In conclusion this is a big deal to the LGBT community for full acceptance in all walks of life. That includes the United States Military.
