Second possible Tesla autopilot crash under investigation
Last week, Tesla Motors ended up under investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for what is believed to be the first fatality in a vehicle operating in self-driving mode.
Now, there’s a second potential crash in Pennsylvania involving Tesla’s new Autopilot feature and the NHTSA is looking into it. Tesla described the first crash as an anomaly.
Companies like Apple, Google and GM are testing self-driving cars but so far there has been scant regulation of the technology. However last week’s fatal incident put a spotlight on the auto industry’s push to give cars the ability to drive themselves.
Note that Tesla does state that all drivers need to be ready to grab the wheel at any second while using Autopilot. The ‘Autopilot’ feature is meant to assist. It is not a feature that is defined as a self driving automobile.
