Olympics Rio Day 9: The best highlights
Day 9 of the Summer Olympic games in Rio flew by. Literally.
Usain Bolt won gold in record fashion, holding off Justin Gatlin in the 100m with a time of 9.81 seconds. South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk made history in the 400m, winning gold by a time of 43.03 and smashing Michael Johnson’s record by 0.15 seconds.
Jelagat Sumgong was responsible for Kenya’s first medal by completing the Olympic marathon in two hours, 24 minutes and 4 seconds ahead of Kenyan-born Eunice Kirwa. The final of the women’s triple jump was won by Colombian favourite Caterine Ibarguen.
The UK’s Andy Murray became the first player to win back-to-back Olympic titles, defeating Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Britain’s Justin Rose overcame a strong challenge from Swede Henrik Stenson to claim the first Olympic golf gold medal since 1904.
Artistic gymnast Max Whitlock won his second Olympic gold medal of the day by narrowly beating Great Britain teammate Louis Smith in the men’s pommel horse. American Simone Biles keeps piling up the gold medals after she claimed one in the vault event. The first gold medal in wrestling at this year’s games went to Cuba’s Ismael Borrero Molina for beating Japan’s Shinobu Ota in the men’s Greco-Roman 59kg final.
