Researchers have been able to confirm the existence of a planet known as Proxima B orbiting Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our sun. The planet is warm enough for liquid water is almost certainly rocky and terrestrial and could even have an atmosphere. Astronomers now believe Proxima B might be the closest home to life outside of our solar system.
Breakthrough Starshot announced its plan to send a tiny spacecraft to the Alpha Centauri system later in this century. It would take more than 20 years for a spacecraft traveling at 20 percent of the speed of light to reach Proxima Centauri. It will then take another 4.24 years for any data to arrive back to us on Earth.
