China’s Futuristic ‘Vertical Forest’ Will Scrub Smog From The Sky
China is dropping massive amounts of cash on infrastructure. They recently finished building the biggest radio telescope in the world, and now they want to build huge skyscraper forests that will help scrub the smog out of the sky.
These Vertical Forests are covered in plants and trees, and will suck up the urban air pollution that’s a serious problem in major Chinese cities. Not only will they suck up the pollution, they produce clean oxygen, and they’ll give a boost to the much needed local biodiversity.
Italian architecture firm Stefano Boeri Architetti unveiled its designs for the Nanjing Green Towers, which are a pair of buildings planned for use in Nanjing, China. (Ed Note: If Nanjing rings a bell, you can Google that)
The planned Vertical Forests will hold around 1,100 trees from nearly two-dozen species. Among the trees, they will hold 2,500 plants and shrubs. This will combine to be 64,000 square feet of beautiful forests that crawl into the sky above.
Are there estimates of how much crap they these towers will pull out of the air? Absolutely.
The Vertical Forests will absorb 25 tons of carbon dioxide each year and will produce around 60 kilograms of oxygen every day.
The architecture firm expects the project to be completed some in 2018. Boeri’s firm is looking to expand this sort of project in other Chinese cities like Shijiazhuang, Liuzhou, Guizhou, Shanghai and Chongqing. Boeri has similar prototype projects like these in Milan, Italy, and Switzerland.
Boeri’s firm said it expected the green tower project would be completed in 2018. Beyond the project in Nanjing, Boeri’s firm is eyeing future projects in other major Chinese cities, including Shijiazhuang, Liuzhou, Guizhou, Shanghai and Chongqing.
In Nanjing, the towers will follow the prototypes of Boering’s original Vertical Forest in Milan, Italy, and a second project in Lausanne, Switzerland.
