There Are Plans To Build A New Colossus Of Rhodes Mega Statue
One of the things that make epic movies even more epic is when they feature gigantic statues from centuries before. Having those featured in like The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones adds to the lore of the story that there is a lot of history before this story even happened.
We’ve had and still have statues in our real history that have wowed anyone from the poorest person to the richest man eating grapes in a bed of silk. Just look at the biggest statues in the world by height currently:
Those statues are:
1. Spring Temple Buddha 153 m (incl. 25 m pedestal and 20 m throne)
2. Statue of Liberty 93 m (incl. 47 m pedestal)
3. The Motherland Calls 91 m (excl. pedestal)
4. Christ the Redeemer 38 m (incl. 8 m pedestal)
5. Statue of David 5.17 m (excl. 2.5 m pedestal)
I find The Motherland Calls a really phenomenal statue to see. However, there is one statue, the Colossus of Rhodes, that remains one of the most famous, except it was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC. It was about 30 meters tall, so not as tall as these, but it started construction in 202 BC. It’s 2017, and I probably couldn’t make a realistic mini-statue with a 3D printer.
That all being said, apparently a group of people want to construct a new Colossus of Rhodes.
This new statue would be 500-feet tall. Quite a bit larger than the original statue. It’s being estimated to cost around $283 million dollars to construct, but people have been known to spend money on stupider things.
