What Is The Future Of The DC Extended Universe If ‘Justice League’ Fails?
When it comes to movies from the recent DC Extended Universe, opinions have been mostly negative. Sure, each film has made some money, but not what they should have made. Batman v Superman should’ve easily cleared a billion, but bad reviews and bad word of mouth led what should’ve been the biggest superhero film of all time into a $873.3 million box office on a $300 million budget. That’s pretty bad. I know it’s not “bad”, but for that movie, that absolute garbage.

Besides Wonder Woman crushing it for being a solidly written, directed and acted film, the entire DCEU is in turmoil. Man of Steel, got bad reviews and underwhelmed, BvS did the same, and Suicide Squad was a complete disaster. With recent trailers of the new Justice League trailer getting mixed reviews, what will happen if their tentpole superhero film sh*ts the urinal as well?
It will be the end of the universe they tried to create. The problem is that they try a little too hard to copy Marvel’s formula, and even that’s getting a bit tired. What Marvel did is work to develop things a lot more organically. The Avengers came as the 6th film in the universe, but it felt more natural since they fleshed everything out better. Justice League is coming after only 4 films, with only one of the films being enjoyable.
The Avengers made $207,438,708 in its opening weekend. An astounding amount of money for a movie that comic book fans would’ve never dreamed have been made. Justice League is projected to make $110M-$120M in its opening weekend. With all the major DC stars being featured in the film, and with The Avengers featuring some second-tier characters, it’s not a good sign for a universe that is planned for years to come.
With Thor: Ragnarok getting some of the best reviews of any Marvel movie, will Justice League be yet another movie besides Wonder Woman to get trashed by critics? The film has gone through quite the turnaround in recent months. Director Zack Snyder stepped down from the project after a family tragedy, Joss Whedon (The Avengers) had to step in and try to fix what has been called a mess of a film, reshoots and rewrites had to happen, oh, and then there is the behind-the-scenes crap from the actors and director.
Ben Affleck groped a woman who worked for Mtv years ago. Jason Momoa had footage come back to haunt him from Comic-Con where he laughed about getting to rape beautiful women on Game of Thrones. Then there’s director Joss Whedon’s leaked Wonder Woman script that was incredibly misogynistic. It portrayed the character as practically not being able to do anything without a man. Thankfully that script never saw production.
I feel that all of these elements could kill the DC Extended Universe into prompting a full-reboot of everything. All those elements I mentioned still don’t even touch how bad the trailers make the movie look. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman just seems like it’s him playing himself in a costume. Ben Affleck, now hard to look at because he grabs women, is an awkward Batman. Gal Gadot is incredible. Ezra Miller was one of the only glowing things from the trailer. He seems to capture The Flash like he is in the comics, but we’ll see. Ray Fisher looks good too.
With so much going badly in these movies, Justice League really has to knock it out of the park. Maybe with Whedon joining the production team, he could right the ship. I admire Snyder’s attempts at making a superhero films, but the constant slo-mo, sluggish pacing, poor dialogue, and lack of overdone visual styles make it a chore to sit through any of his films. I go to watch Superman save people’s lives, not witness a montage of him looking like a depressed coal worker coming out of a mine.
