Russia Reveals Drone That Can Lift a Load of Weight And Fly For A Long Time
Here at Social Underground, we generally love drones, but we warn of their potential dangers. There are the smaller drones you can buy at a big box store, to the ones that the military straps missiles to. Then there is this Russian drone that can carry a lot of weight, the fly for extremely long distances.
More Drones: The Potential Havoc From Drones
A drone that was designed by Russian researchers is the bodybuilder and marathoner of the quadcopter drone community. Why? This badboy can carry a 400-pound (181-kg) payload and fly for up to eight hours. It’s called SKYF, and it was designed with logistics and agribusinesses companies in mind.
This drone is capable of a vertical take-off that can be used in areas for pesticides and fertilizers, not to mention helping the reforestation and seed planting in and around remote areas. Oh, let’s not forget carrying rescue food and medicine to the areas that need it where planes and helicopters may not be able to make it. I think Puerto Rico might need a few of these drones right now.
The drone was designed and built by a Russian company called ARDN. It has a max speed of 43.6 MPH. What about how big it is? It’s huge compared to drones you know of before it. Here are some stats: 17 feet by 7.2 feet. It can fly at a max of nearly 10,000 feet. Sometimes you have to be a huge drone to lift and move that amount of material.
Let’s take a look at the SKYF’s potential applications:
- Aerial application chemicals: Pesticide and fertilizer application
- Precipitation management: Help reduce snow accumulation and prevent and extinguish fires
- Forestry: Rapidly plants seeds in biodegradable capsules for the restoration of forests after deforestation or forest fires
- Logistics in oil and gas: Delivery of items such as food, spare parts and measuring equipment to oil rigs or remote drilling stations
- Postal logistics: Delivery of heavy good to hard-to-reach residential areas
- Marine logistics: Delivery of goods to ships at sea or on the move
- Power line and road construction (geodetic work): Remote sensing for the construction of power lines, roads and pipelines
- Instrumental control: Control of instruments for hard-to-reach infrastructure such as wind power generators
- Emergency situations: Delivery of food, rescue equipment and medicine to areas of natural disasters or at sea
The drone is capable of folding down and being able to fit in to a 20-foot cargo container. It’s like one of those workout machines you never use that can fit under your bed. If you need to use the drone, it only needs 10 minutes of setup to get it back in the air.
