The Underground — Issue #143
Everything you need to know about in this weekly series: A new book about a serial killer who will terrify you to your very core, Charlize Theron tears into some hot wings on Hot Ones, fruit exploding in slow motion, and Mark Hamill finally getting a star on the Walk of Fame.
At Social Underground we go beyond the mainstream stuff and see what’s underneath the surface. What should we get into, listen to, read, eat or watch? If there is something in our culture that needs attention that’s our job: Show you the underground things that you need to know about: Books, music, television, movies, comedians, art, and whatever else we can find to get you into something you never knew about. That’s The Underground.
1. Patton Oswalt’s late wife’s novel I’ll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara about the Golden State Killer will haunt you. I consider myself a history buff, but most importantly a serial killer buff. I am interested in the human condition that makes someone do such horrible things to people, then keep doing them in increasingly horrific ways. This is coming from a guy who took way to long to handle raw chicken with his bare hands.
I kept hearing about McNamara’s quest to find the Golden State Killer since Patton Oswalt is a comic hero of mine, but when I heard about the book, I looked into it. This guy makes the Zodiac look like a toddler trying to walk for the first time on ice. The photos drawn from eyewitness statements kept me up at night. He raped 50+ people and killed 12 that we know of in California. He taunted his victims before and after the crimes. He still hasn’t been caught.
I implore you to buy this book because of the work and effort put into it getting released. The sense of urgency into finding this person drips onto every page. The love of Patton to finish his late wife’s work make it even more worth the read. I’m also barricading my doors for the rest of my life after reading this. Buy it here on Amazon. It might be out of stock sometimes since everyone is throwing their wallets at it. This is a good thing.
2. Charlize Theron eats some Hot Wings, and she further wins the hearts of people everywhere. We’ve been covering Hot Ones hosted by Sean Evans for a while. Sure, he’s interviewed people I didn’t know, but the show has gone from UNDERGROUND content to a force of nature. Charlize Theron is one of the most popular actors on the planet. She’s one of the most talented actors on the planet. She’s also so pretty that I’d eat a super hot wing if she asked me to, even if it would make me puke blood. That’s why this episode is so good.
She has a foul mouth, is funny as hell, and seems like a general joy to be around the entire time. She has a new movie coming out called Gringo, which looks really funny. Order some wings, pour a glass of milk, and watch Charlize Theron crush some hot wings like a Oscar winner only can.
3. Here is a video that shows fruit exploding into each other in slow motion. Is there anything else you really need to know about? When I was little, we had puny little bottle rockets that barely did anything when they exploded in the air. However, we did have lots of fruit that we could put them in. This led to me and my friends having endless fun blowing up watermelons and what not. Was it safe? Meh, we lit it and ran away, so being a responsible adult, I would tell you and your children not to do it.
This is different and kind of beautiful. These fruits are launched at each other, explode, and happen in slo-mo. Will this make you want to eat some fruit or drink some juice? Yes. Ugh, even writing about it makes me thirsty. Have some fun and watch what happens WHEN FRUIT COLLIDES! (*Head bangs*)
4. Mark Hamill got his star on the Walk of Fame, finally! If you don’t know who Mark Hamill is, you can go away. He’s the nicest human being you could ever meet. He’s a walking Xanax that calms everyone in any room he walks into. He’s the iconic voice of The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. He reprised his role in the new Star Wars trilogy and left us wanting more. That’s what he does.
What’s really weird? He just now got his star on the Walk of Fame? He should have 5 stars on the sidewalk. He’s Luke Skywalker! He’s the default protagonist in the hero’s journey. He saves the princess, fights the bad guys, and makes you inspired to be a good person. Whatever, Walk of Fame. It’s about time this legend gets his star.
Watch the entire ceremony below. A lot of guests, a sadly, Carrie Fisher can only be there in spirit.
