HAL-Like Robot is First AI-Powered Companion In Space
The science fiction-inspired robot hardwired to assist astronauts, launched from Florida early Friday. The Crew Interactive Mobile Companion (CIMON) is an English-speaking droid roughly the size of a basketball. “What we’re trying to do with CIMON is to increase the efficiency of the astronaut.” – Matthias Biniok, IBM Engineer
CIMON will help German astronaut Alexander Gerst conduct three science experiments on the International Space Station’s European module. During the experiments, CIMON will verbally communicate step-by-step instructions to Gerst. CIMON will return to Earth on Dec. 13.
